Welcome to our comprehensive guide to making the most out of your trip to Thailand. At The Yard Hostel, we are committed to helping our guests experience the vibrant culture, delicious food, and sustainable travel options in Bangkok and beyond.

CULTURE

Dress Code: When visiting Buddhist temples, dress modestly. Ensure your shoulders and legs are covered. Keeping a scarf in your bag is a handy tip for unexpected temple visits.

Essential Thai Phrases: While Thai can be challenging, learning a few key phrases goes a long way:

  • Hello: Sa Was Dee Ka (for women) / Sa Was Dee Kap (for men)
  • Thank You: Kob Khun Ka (for women) / Kob Khun Kap (for men)
  • Bathroom: Hong Nam
  • Sorry: Kor Thod
  • How Much: Tao Rai
  • Vegetarian Food: Aharn Jay
  • Spicy: Phed
  • Not Spicy: Mai Phed

Being Polite: Thai people value politeness and seldom raise their voices. Maintain a calm demeanor, even when enjoying the nightlife.

The Royal Family: Avoid making any negative comments about the royal family, as Thailand has strict lese majeste laws.

Shoes: Always remove your shoes before entering homes and temples. When in doubt, ask.

Alcohol: Alcohol consumption is prohibited in temples, pharmacies, public offices, educational institutions, petrol stations, and public parks. Stick to bars and designated areas.

FOOD: A PARADISE FOR FOODIES

Bangkok is a melting pot of flavors, with the Ari neighborhood near The Yard Hostel being a food lover’s paradise.

Utensils: Use chopsticks for noodles and forks and spoons for other dishes. Knives are typically not used at the table.

Condiments: Thai cuisine often includes condiments like sugar, fish sauce, vinegar, and chili. Don’t hesitate to customize your dish to your taste.

Food Culture: In Thailand, people ask, “Have you eaten?” instead of “How are you?”. Embrace the local food culture by enjoying frequent snacks. If you’re unsure about trying new dishes, consider a food tour.

Beer with Ice: Cool down with a beer served over ice – a common practice in Thailand.

MONEY

Exchange Rates: It’s usually better to exchange money in Thailand. Banks and exchange kiosks are readily available. Check current rates here.

ATM Withdrawals: Thai ATMs typically charge a fee of about 220 BHT per withdrawal, on top of your bank’s fees. Ensure your bank is aware of your travel plans.

Credit Cards: Cash is preferred, especially at smaller businesses. Major chains and hotels accept credit cards.

Traveling to Chiang Mai

  • By Bus: Night buses from Mo Chit Bus Terminal take about 10 hours. Bring a jacket for the cold air conditioning.
  • By Air: Flights from Don Mueang Airport are quick and affordable if booked in advance. Check luggage policies.

We offer a service to purchase train and bus tickets for 100 BHT. If you miss your train, enjoy a free Chang beer on us.

Island Hopping

Thailand has a robust ferry network for island travel. Avoid buying tickets at the pier to save money. Check schedules at Ferry Samui and Phuket Ferry. Beware of rough seas on smaller boats and check for pier closures due to weather.
