Bang Krachao: Explore the Green Lung of Bangkok

Escape the chaos of Bangkok in Bang Krachao, the city's "green lung." Enjoy lush nature, local culture, and cycling. Visit its floating market, parks, and cafes for a perfect tranquil weekend getaway.

Bang Krachao Thailand

Nestled away from the bustling streets of Bangkok lies Bang Krachao, often referred to as the "green lung" of the city. This lush island, with its sprawling vegetation, serves as a tranquil refuge for both locals and travelers seeking a serene escape. Perfect for a weekend getaway, Bang Krachao offers a unique blend of nature and local culture, making it an ideal spot to explore on a bicycle.

Bangkok is a city that never sleeps, its streets constantly buzzing with activity. When the chaos becomes overwhelming, it’s the perfect time to discover Bang Krachao—a hidden gem still unknown to many travelers. Spending a Sunday on this island was nothing short of amazing!

While most Bangkok guides highlight Lumpini Park or occasionally Rama VIII Park, few mention Bang Krachao. This makes it a hidden treasure worth visiting. You can book a guided bike tour or rent a bike and explore independently. I chose the latter, and it was incredibly easy and enjoyable.

HOW TO GET TO BANG KRACHAO FROM THE YARD HOSTEL

Starting your journey from The Yard Hostel, take the BTS Skytrain to Bang Na station (fare: 59 THB). From there, you have two options: a taxi (approximately 50 THB) or a mototaxi (around 40 THB) to the Bang Na pier, located near Wat Bang Na. At the pier, take a ferry across the river (fare: 4 THB).

Once you arrive in Bang Krachao, you'll find bicycles available for rent at just 50 THB per day. Don't forget to grab a map of the island and have Google Maps handy in case you get lost. The island is easy to navigate, with distances no longer than 5 km from one point to another. However, be cautious on the main road, which does have some traffic.

WHAT TO DO IN BANG KRACHAO

1. Visit the Weekend Floating Market

I highly recommend visiting Bang Krachao on a weekend to experience the charming floating market. While it's not as large as Damnoen Saduak, it offers a delightful local atmosphere with a few boats and stalls. It’s perfect for families, with spaces for children to interact with farm animals and picnic areas to enjoy.

For a more relaxed experience, head to Si Nakhon Khuean Park, which boasts a serene lake ideal for cycling and enjoying the greenery. It's a great spot for a picnic and to unwind amidst nature.
